The pain of being a serial web developer
Okay, I think that would be the right term for what I am.
Currently I own/operate/code/whatever around 50 different websites (ontop of all the websites/companies that I am a webmaster for outside of what I own), and I’m facing the problem of not finding enough time in my 24-hour day to devote to this websites. I’ve tried to 100% Mt. Dew diet, but there are only so many I can drink in a day before my heart feels like it will jump out and run a marathon. So yesterday morning after going through around 300-400 emails, I came up with the idea of only focusing on a single website development per day. Prior to this I had been developing bits and pieces of about 5-10 websites per day ontop of maintaining what is already currently developed. But now, going into Day 2 of this, well, lets call it an experiment, I feel like I’m accomplishing a lot more. Yesterday I finished up the majority of the coding of a Free Arcade Game Directory type website that I had been putting off for weeks and weeks. How long did it take under my new time management? About 9 hours from start to finish. And the best part was when I was finished last night I really felt like I accomplished something, instead of the nagging feeling I had before that I forgot to do something with one of the many developments I worked on.
I know a lot of you are laughing as hard as you can because you came to the realization years and years ago, but I’m happy I am finally catching up with the pack. Oh yeah, before I forget, this past weekend I did come out with a new development that you can see on the far right column of the aforementioned website. I’ll try to make a blog post about it later today or tomorrow.
iPhone vs. Laptop … who will win the domain registration duel?

… and the winner is … Justine on her laptop!
Oh, yeah, what were they “dueling” for? The domain name: FakeiJustine.com!
While hanging at the Seagate Bloghaus with iJustine, Bluefox, and Ben, I suggested that someone should set up a site at fakeiJustine.com with a fakeSteve.blogspot.com style parody site of Justine.
Ben thought this was brilliant and whipped out his iPhone. But iJustine immediately saw the problem with that, whipped out her laptop, and beat Ben to the punch.
Lesson here: Don’t get into a domain registration draw with iJustine.
What would really make it awesome is if the person that blogs from FakeiJustine.com (we know it will be Justine, but keep reading) was THIS GUY!

Just as Randy Newman finished up singing some crazy song, the Apple Store went back online featuring all the new products that Steve Job’s mentioned during his MacWorld Keynote.

MacBook AIR!

Steve Jobs just announced the launch of the “world’s thinnest notebook”, the MacBook Air!

Jason Chen:
Thinness: MacBook air goes from 0.76 inches down to 0.16 inches at the thin end. The thickest part is thinner than the Sony TZ Series. 0.76 vs. 0.8. It’s so thin, it even fits inside a vanilla envelope. Steve whips out a vanilla envelope.10:11 am ON Jan 15 2008
iJustine Takes Down USTREAM!

Justine from iJustine.tv / TastyBlogSnack was trying to livecast Steve Jobs MacWorld Keynote address on USTREAM.tv and I guess USTREAM’s servers couldn’t handle the traffic so they banned her #TREATS channel!
No, iJustine wasn’t able to actually lifecast the keynote as her feed went down (most likely Steve found a way to block eVDO or something), but somehow it still killed ustream’s servers. When I last checked (around 11:15am CST) there were over 900 viewers in her chatroom so if that is what killed USTREAM, then they defintely have a lot of work ahead of them.
Apple TV II … rent movies on your TV in Widescreen and HDTV Quality … audio video podcasts

Steve Jobs announces new product at MacWorld: Time Capsule AirPort Extreme station
Straight from the texting at Gizmodo:
Jason Chen:
Time Capsule will be sold in a 500GB version and a 1TB version for $299 and $499. It ships February. It also looks exactly like an Airport Extreme, except with different ports on the backJason Chen:
Time Machine: Leopard works great with a desktop machine, but it doesn’t work well with laptops because you have to keep plugging and unplugging a USB drive. Now he’s introducing a new backup station with 802.11n and server-grade backup station. It’s an AirPort Extreme station with ports in the back, allowing you to back up your macs wirelessly to Time Capsule
I’m a PC user but can’t wait to hear what Steve Jobs says at MacWorld!
This will be a quick post as I am currently “reading” Gizmodo’s LIVE BLOG from Steve Jobs keynote at MacWorld. I was really hoping the iJustine wouldn’t get caught sneaking her webcam in, but oh well, I guess I’ll have to live with Gizmodo’s live blog and having to refresh the screen every few seconds to see what Steve has said next.
So far..
Jason Chen:
He has four things he wants to talk to us about today. The first is Leopard. Over 5 million copies sold, and about 20% of Mac OS X’s install base has upgraded to Leopard. Now Steve’s quoting Mossberg, Pogue, Ed Baig and PC Magazine for quotes on Leopard. Two thumbs up, as it were.
Jason Chen:
Steve’s taking us on a retrospective of 2007. iPhone, iPod, etc. He’s thanking everyone for an extraordinary 2007
Jason Chen:
“Welcome to Macworld 2008. We’ve got some great stuff for you. There’s clearly some great stuff in the air today.”
9:15 am ON Jan 15 2008
Jason Chen:
Itt’s starting! A new Mac vs. PC commercial: Happy New Year 2008. And Steve Jobs takes the stage.
9:14 am ON Jan 15 2008
Jason Chen:
Steve’s most likely waiting for Feist to end. Nobody cuts off Feist…bitch.

Getting exciting!
ALERT: Network Solutions steals domain ideas
While browsing Digg today I came across a story from the Domain Tools Blog about Network Solutions stealing webmasters (and potential customers) domain ideas and wanted to give it a test myself just to, well, re-confirm what was going on.
The author of the story ran his test using the domain neimanmarcusverizon.com, but in my test I decided on ownersofnetworksolutionsaredicks.com (for those who can’t find the words in it, owners of network solutions are dicks). Let the domain registration race begin …

Lucky me … the domain is still available! So I surf away from this page for a few seconds and then decided to type-in ownersofnetworksolutionsaredicks.com in my browser and see what happens …

Wow … someone already decided to register ownersofnetworksolutionsaredicks.com … but it was just available about 5-seconds ago. I wonder if someone else (other than Network Solutions) thought of the same name … lets check the WHOIS …

…. and the winner of the race is: Network Solutions!
… and the loser is: THE CUSTOMER
I know that Network Solutions will probably come out with a press release or random quote saying the reason they register the domains people type into their system is to make sure their customers are able to register them. But they will forget to also mention the main reason is that almost all the other domain registrars out there sell domain registrations well below Network Solutions’ $19.99 pricetag, so NS decided to hold these domains ransom for a couple days making these people pay an inflated registration pricetag. Great business idea, but defintely a poor customer relations idea.
